StitchFit / Field notes

Small tools.
Visible working.

StitchFit is an independent fabric-planning utility. It turns chart dimensions into measurements and helps compare a project against an existing piece of fabric. It is not affiliated with DMC, Yarn Tree or a fabric retailer.

The calculation

  1. Effective stitches per inch = fabric count ÷ threads or blocks crossed per stitch.
  2. Design width = chart width in stitches ÷ effective stitches per inch. Calculate height in the same way.
  3. Convert inches to centimetres by multiplying by 2.54 when needed.
  4. Add twice the chosen border to each dimension.
  5. Compare both cut dimensions with the available fabric, then test a 90-degree rotation.

Maximum stitch capacity is rounded down to whole stitches after subtracting the border. Displayed measurements use two decimal places; the fit check uses unrounded values.

Limits

The tool assumes a uniform count across the fabric, rectangular designs and rectangular usable fabric. It does not model shrinkage, distortion, fractional borders, shaped pieces, thread consumption or a framer’s requirements. Always measure before cutting.

Editorial approach

Guides explain the calculation with worked examples and link to the material definitions used. They do not claim hands-on product testing or professional framing expertise. No fabricated reviews, ratings or sales figures are used. This first release was prepared with AI assistance and checked against explicit calculation tests.

Reference information reviewed 17 October 2026. If a result looks wrong, check units, stitch count, over-one/over-two and whether your border is per side. The formula above lets you verify it independently.
